Consulting law firms in the face of change:

As the legal market develops, many law firms are faced with difficulty adapting to these changes.

For example, the traditional, broad role of the legal secretary has been split into several distinct roles.

The more specific aspects are now: PAs, typists, and document managers.

The changing dynamics of the law firm structure, in addition to the services demanded by clients, can make it difficult for many law firms to offer a quality service, whilst still being cost-effective.

For many law firms, two of the largest over-heads are secretarial and support staff.

Managing staffing levels, as well as document production, can provide challenges in the competitive legal market.

Law firms which are looking to maximise their flexibility, whilst also eliminating their down-time costs, are increasingly looking at out-sourcing as an essential solution.

Case study:

We were closely involved with the law firm Trowers & Hamlins (T&H), by assisting them in the 2011 relocation of their Document Production staff to Birmingham.

Simultaneously, we advertised for, and then interviewed for, and then placed 25 new employees for the law firm – all within only three months.

We minimised the impact of redundancies which the change created, by consulting and engaging with the support personnel who were being offered redundancy packages by T&H.

We assisted in this transition, by building those employees’ confidence and skills, in addition to us providing them with both technical and interview training.

We also assisted during that phase by enabling T&H’s staff who were being offered redundancy packages to re-enter the work-place, and by placing candidates from those meetings into suitable new roles.

In parallel, we recruited a new team of juniors into T&H to do administration for the teams in London, rather than high-spec Secretaries and PAs.

This new team structure reduced the costs to T&H, and also enabled the juniors to revolutionise their career prospects, by joining one of the UK’s leading law firms.
